[2012] Sabah, Malaysia (Feb 2012)

After my perfect holiday in Japan, I went on a short 3-day trip to Sabah. Sabah is located in East Malaysia and has one of the most recognizable landmarks throughout the world: Mt. Kinabalu. AirAsia and Fireflyz both operate domestic flights from within West Malaysia to East Malaysia.

Unfortunately, since this was a company retreat, we only went as far as Kota Kinabalu (lit: Kinabalu City) and the island nearby. Kota Kinabalu is the capital city of Sabah and offers some interesting markets nearby. It's also the starting point of most Sabah journeys into the mountains or various islands nearby.

I would say it's worth it going to one of the smaller islands around Sabah, as they're kept in pristine condition. The beaches are not too crowded, and they offer different activities depending on what you feel like doing (e.g. snorkeling, parasailing etc.). Sipadan is considered to be one of the most beautiful islands of Sabah - pity I didn't get to go, but with an "okay" beach like this, can you imagine how much more beautiful Sipadan would be? Our beach had limited activities - we pretty much just snorkeled and played volleyball with lunch afterwards. Other beach activities such as parasailing, water skiing etc. could be booked there, but you would be taken to a separate island for the activities.

Overall, an enjoyable excursion to one of the beautiful beaches in Sabah, Malaysia.
